Watch 'Here Comes The Neighbourhood': New street art series

This is a fantastic episode from the new web documentary series "Here Comes the Neighbourhood" - a presentation about a neighbourhood in transition called Wynwood in Miami, which is currently being transformed into a public art gallery.

(Photo: Martha Cooper - Artist of the world, Invader makes it to Wynwood.)

Although the neighbourhood is looking good as an arts district, even the artists are awareof the downsides of gentrification and want to make the connection between what's happening there (high unemployment after the older manufacturing industries have gone) and larger global economic uncertainties.

In this episode, (4 of 5 to date), Founder Tony Goldman introduces street artists who are coming from around the world, and traveling to the USA for the first time:

Alejandre Farto aka Vhils from Portugal, Neuzz, Sego and Saner from Mexico, Interesni Kazki from The Ukraine, b. from Greece and Liqen from Spain.

The power of their street art is that ideas flow freely and their art communicates something to those who would otherwise see blank walls.

Heady Music - The new "Headcage" EP by Matthew Dear

Matthew Dear's latest 4-track EP out on the Ghostly International label is looking good.

With stellar cover artwork by talented designer Michael Cina, the track Headcage is voiced by Matthew Dear and co-produced by Van Rivers and the Subliminal Kid, a Swedish duo who worked on Blonde Redhead's Penny Sparkdle, and Fever Ray's self-titled record.

Here's the track...

Prince Returns for a Series of Sold-Out Shows in Toronto

Prince played all the hits and the quote of the night was "You better call the babysitter, I've got too many hits!"

At 53 years old, he still seems youthful. He even made a shout-out for everyone to have an after-party.

According to the Globe and Mail review, "Prince plays 18 more shows in nine cities across Canada through Dec. 17, starting at Halifax’s Metro Centre on Nov. 30."

He shows no signs of slowing down!

The crowd was going wild...  and this video gives a sense of that ...

The evolution of "I'll Take Care of You," the song

Gil Scott-Heron was the inspiration for one of the biggest singles out right now - Drake and Rihanna's cover version "Take Care." Check out what songs before Drake's latest version inspired him:

Original version of "I'll Take Care of You" by the late Gil Scott-Heron:

My favourite version is the remix/collaboration between Gil Scott-Heron and Jamie XX (of XX) on the 2011 album "We're New Here":

Then there's the mainstream hit by Drake and Rihanna that's blowing up:

...And another cover, below, this one by Florence and the Machine, for BBC Radio's Live Lounge:

Post-Graffiti show is on for one more week

I recently checked out the Post-Graffiti art show at the hip Gladstone Hotel in Toronto.

But, the exhibit curator Simon Cole is quick to remind us in the opening lines of the exhibit description with a quote from Marshall Mcluhan that "...the medium is the message."

Street art makes an impact on us because of how it interplays with its surroundings and with the public space it intercepts and temporarily occupies.

Among the peices on display are limited edition prints, collages, paintings and a large photo on a wood panel.

The show features works by the most renowned street artists from around the world, such as Shephard Fairey (Obey Giant, Subliminal Gallery, Los Angeles), Anthony Lister (Australia), Banksy (UK), Faile (New York), and Toronto's own Dan Bergeron - FauxReel.ca.

James Blake is so talented and he's a wonderful performer to watch. He sings flawlessly live too, with great stage presence.

Colorful LED lights can light up your night

I recently stumbled accross some amazing LED lights from http://www.theledart.com.

The lights come in different arrangements and create amazing effects.

I can now understand why some visualists must have an obsession with LEDs!

Delightful!
